Summary/Abstract: The Roma—the largest ethnic minority in Europe—have for centuries been defined by majority societies, often in stigmatizing and exoticizing ways. This article explores the contemporary struggle for recognition, highlighting processes of Romani identity redefinition through the lens of the performative turn. From international activism to the everyday practices of Romani women, the analysis reveals a shift in the perception of Romani identity as a dynamic, performative process of self-determination. Special attention is given to women as agents of change, whose actions challenge stereotypes both within Roma communities and in their relations with majority societies.
