Summary/Abstract: Building on Avishai Margalit’s now-classic The Decent Society, which explores theidea of a society free from humiliation and the role humiliation plays in the lives of individualsand communities, this essay asks what place animals hold in such a decent society. Drawing onlegal, philosophical, and literary sources, the essay traces various ways of thinking about the humili-ation of animals and presents arguments for protecting them from being demeaned.
