Summary/Abstract: Purpose: The present article examines the relationship between the composition, contents, and functions of ʿulūm al-Qurʾān sources and tafsīr introductions (muqaddimāt). The study draws a clear distinction between two catagories of works on Qurʾānic sciences. The first category comprise independent Works, composed from the second century AH onward, and the thematic works that define ʿulūm al-Qurʾān as a systematic field of knowledge. The second category comprises tafsīr introductions, which are positioned in contrast to the systematic ʿulūm al-Qurʾān sources. The research emphasizes that defining ʿulūm al-Qurʾān as an epistemological rather than methodological field is a natural consequence of the Islamic scholarly tradition, whereas tafsīr introductions are shown to be grounded in methodological principles that have been shaped by that tradition. The presenet study analyzes both early ʿulūm al-Qurʾān works and a range of tafsīr introductions, with a view to comparing their conceptual frameworks, contents, and structural features. This comparison extends beyond not limited to a mere examination of literature or subject matter; rather, it relates the shifts observed in tafsīr introductions to the formation of ʿulūm al-Qurʾān as a codified discipline and to the dynamics of its compilation. Method: Methodologically, the study employs content, discourse, and comparative analysis. The corpus selected for analysis includes the works of al-Zarkashī, al-Bulqīnī, and al-Suyūṭī, as well as the introductions of major exegetes such as al-Ṭabarī, Rāghib alIṣfahānī, and al-Qurṭubī, amang others. Findings: The findings reveal that ʿulūm al-Qurʾān sources primarily address the nature of the Qurʾān, its textual features, linguistic and stylistic structures, and the sciences it encompasses at a terminological level. Conversely, tafsīr introductions are are characterised by their expansive nature and adaptability, delineating the identity of the exegete, elucidating the fundamental principles of tafsīr, and fostering methodological and terminological connections between tafsīr and other Islamic sciences. Conclusion: Consequently, it has been determined that the subjects addressed in the introductions to Qurʾanic commentaries vary in terms of content and form from the issues discussed in ʿulūm al-Qurʾān sources. This discrepancy is attributed to the process through which ʿulūm al-Qurʾān evolved into a systematic discipline.
