Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on a gravestone (nišan) located in the graveyard (harem) of the Ali-paša Mosque in Sarajevo, which represents an valuable example of funerary sculpture from the early Ottoman period in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The monument has not yet been the subject of a detailed scholarly analysis. Available sources indicate that it remains in situ and dates back to the second half of the 15th century. The area where it was erected was part of the estate of Balaban, son of Bogčin. The analysed nišan consists of two elements, a headstone (bašlık) and a footstone (ajaklık). Due to its form and accompanying motifs, this nišan can be considered a significant monument for understanding the cultural transition process between the medieval and Ottoman periods in Bosnia.
