Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the texts of a German Slavist Alois Schmau (1901-1970) published in the period 1927-1964 and collected in the book Studies on Njegoš, which was edited by Mirko Krivokapić. These are papers that contextualize Njegoš as a poet and his most significant works – The Ray of Microcosm and The Mountain Wreath – in the traditional string of national literature as well as in the framework of European and world literature. Schmau’s studies remain fully scientifically relevant until today both in their scientific method and in the conclusions found there. Even today they represent a contribution to analyzing and evaluating Njegoš’s work, primarily when it comes to originality, poetic conception and philosophy of The Ray of Microcosm, as well as determining the topics and important elements of The Mountain Wreath. Finally, it contributes to the awareness of how others see Njegoš’s works.
