Summary/Abstract: The first steps towards establishing the Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate were taken in the country’s Parliament as early as 1882, but the unfavorable historical context and opposition from the Ecumenical Patriarchate delayed this goal until after the Great Union of December 1, 1918. At the Congress of the Clergy of Transylvania, held in Sibiu on March 6-8, 1919 (March 19-21, old style), priest Gheorghe Ciuhandu, diocesan advisor in Arad and president of the “Andrei Șaguna” Clergy Association in Transylvania, proposed the establishment of the Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate. In addition to the priest Dr. Gheorghe Ciuhandu from Arad, lawyer Dr. Mihail Gropșianu from Oravița also contributed to the historic moment of the establishment of the Romanian Patriarchate.
