Summary/Abstract: Saint Paul, the great missionary to the Gentiles, began his difficult work in the eastern part of the empire, not because it was the closest, but because it was home to the most important cultural centers, from which ideas could spread throughout the world of the time, even to Rome. Often, in his vast missionary activity, which took him over 30,000 km, partly on the Roman road network and partly on the swaying planks of ancient ships, he endured various dangers, beatings, imprisonment, hunger, and thirst (2 Corinthians 6:4-5; 11:23-27), even shipwreck, and physical illness often humbled him, lest he become proud of the multitude and greatness of the discoveries he had made (2 Corinthians 7:7-9).
