Summary/Abstract: This study consists of new findings identified as a result of research on the life of Şehâbeddin Ahmed b. Mahmud es-Sivâsî el-Ayasulûğî, a Qurʾanic exegete who was educated in the madrasas built by the Anatolian Seljuk State in Sivas and who lived during the formative period of the Ottoman Empire. After completing his education, Şehâbeddin Ahmed b. Mahmud es-Sivâsî continued to reside in Sivas, where he pursued his teaching and scholarly activities. He possessed an intellectual character that sought to move beyond the prevailing scholarly tradition of his time. In this regard, while he followed the customary practice of writing commentaries and glosses in some of his works, he also endeavored to identify and address the deficiencies he observed during his educational career and attempted to implement solutions to them. As a result, his works—most notably his Qurʾanic commentary and his treatise on the methodology of ḥadīth, many manuscripts of which are preserved in libraries and have been published in printed form—stand as clear examples of this effort. However, in accordance with the practices of his era, at a time that cannot be precisely determined, he left Sivas, where he had been educated, and migrated to the territories of the Aydınoğulları Beylik. While presenting the available information concerning his life, this study will also examine in particular the reasons underlying this migration.
