Summary/Abstract: Mt 25:1 in the text of the Zographou Gospel originally contained a longer version (with an addition) attested in Greek manuscripts of the Caesarean and Western types, as well as in Syriac manuscripts. According to Jagić, “another hand” made a correction by deleting the addition “and the brides”. Thus, the text of the Zograf Gospel was brought into line with the manuscripts of the Byzantine textual type, which, since Erasmus of Rotterdam, have become normative in both the East and the West, because they constituted the majority text (Mehrheitstext). However, modern biblical textual criticism gives little value to the manuscripts of the Byzantine type. It places them only in the fifth category. Much older manuscripts of the Alexandrian, Western and Caesarean types, which are claimed to be closer to the autograph, are valued more. The same is true of Mt 25:1. Alternative readings attested in non-Byzantine manuscripts, which are more highly valued by criticism, are considered authentic. This creates hermeneutical difficulties and opens up many possibilities for contemporary contextual exegesis, often also for ideologically colored interpretations. The text of Mt 25:1 in the Zographou Gospel is the only Slavonic text that shows an original difference from the Byzantine type. Given the age of the Zographou Gospel, this deviation can be explained by the lack of established control of textual transmission, which, in the Slavic copying tradition, would follow later, after such control was established over the Greek manuscripts. The Zographou Gospel confirms the opinion of modern biblical scholars that the Slavonic text of the Bible is not just a “daughter” of the Byzantine type. The Slavonic text is hybrid. It contains variants of the Western and Caesarean types. Mt 25:1 in the Zographou Gospel, in its form before correction, is identical to the Greek manuscripts of the Caesarean and Western types. How these manuscripts reached the Slavic copyist is a question that awaits a scholarly answer. It is quite natural that the Slavonic text was influenced by the Western type, but attenti on should also be paid to the possibility of an indirect influence of the Syriac text on the Slavonic Bible through Greek manuscripts of the “Western” type that were in use on the shores of the Black Sea or through Georgian and Armenian ones.
