AN EXAMINATION OF THE RECORDING OF THE GAZEL "HER ZAMAN VAMIK-I AZRA OLUR" IN THE UŞŞAK MAQAM BY TANBURİ CEMİL BEY and HAFIZ OSMAN

Summary/Abstract: The gazel record "Her zaman bir vamık-ı azra olur", recorded and released between 1912-1915 by Tanburi Cemil Bey and Hafız Osman, and listed as number 10483 in the Orfeon Record catalog, is an important example of the accompanied gazel form. The singers and instrumentalists included in these recordings participated as guests within the framework of Cemil Bey's agreement with Orfeon Record. Nine recordings were made with Hafız Osman within the scope of this agreement. This recording, which is listed as number 821 in Tanburi Cemil Bey's notebook where he evaluated his recordings, was evaluated by Cemil Bey as "less good". The lyrics are by Mustafa Safvet el-Mevlevî, and the first two couplets of the 11-couplet contain advice. The recording's start-end duration is 3 minutes and 44 seconds. In this study, the recording was examined in terms of: the volume of the tanbur and the singer's voice, the choice and treatment of the makam, its transcription into musical notation, structure, form, melody, and tanbur technique.
