Summary/Abstract: The topic of Njegoš as a philosopher was first introduced by S. Nedeljković, a naturalist, in 1877, who compared Njegoš’s phrase “war in nature” with Darwin’s concept of „struggle for survival“. Petronijević is the first Serbian philosopher who has written about Njegoš’s philosophy (The Philosophy in “The Mountain Wreath”, 1908). It is open to question how philosophy, expressed through the language of concepts, can be found in a literary work, written in the language of metaphores and symbols. For Petronijević, Njegoš is a philosopher because he answers philosophical questions through poetry. Indeed, Petronijević has shown that Njegoš is one of the precursors of Darwin’s thesis of the struggle for existence, but he is, first of all, a philosopher of pessimism. Moreover, he also answers other philosophical questions – of the existence of God, the immortality of the soul, the teleology of nature etc. With this, Petronijević has begun the future explorations of Njegoš’s philosophy.
