Summary/Abstract: Disinformation exerts a considerable influence on financial markets and the global economy by eroding investor and consumer trust. Illustrative cases include the 2020 circulation of false rumors regarding Tesla’s financial instability and earlier disinformation from 2018 related to alleged economic sanctions targeting the European Union. Such examples reveal how strategically misleading information can drive market volatility and distort economic decision-making. In addition, coordinated campaigns – such as those involving alleged food contamination or unsubstantiated health risks linked to 5G technology – demonstrate how disinformation can damage corporate reputations and hinder technological progress. In more severe instances, disinformation contributes to financial instability, stock market turbulence, and the weakening of national economies, particularly within sensitive geopolitical contexts. To mitigate these effects, it is essential that both national governments and supranational entities – such as the European Union and international financial organizations – implement coordinated communication strategies, enforce transparency in market-relevant information, and adopt strict regulatory frameworks to counter disinformation. These efforts are necessary to protect financial stability, ensure investor confidence, and uphold public trust across interconnected markets.
