Summary/Abstract: The development of cities is related to the emergence of new and/or increase in the existing opportunities for meeting the needs of their residents, in which an important role falls to municipal enterprises. The specificity of this type of enterprise means that they do not operate independently on the market, but are integrated with local government structures. They operate in conditions of a peculiar dualism: on the one hand, a municipal enterprise is naturally expected to make the necessary economic calculations of its activities and on the other hand – it is expected to satisfy social needs. The article, after a brief introduction to the issue of socio-economic development of cities, describes the foundations and conditions of municipal enterprises' functioning. In the second part of the article, the impact of the benefits resulting from the operation of municipal enterprises in the context of the socio-economic development of cities was analysed. Moreover, difficulties encountered by their management boards and owners were presented. The analysis was based on the activities of two municipal enterprises in the City of Radzionków.
