Summary/Abstract: The notary public, a legal professional who performs, de lege lata, a service of public interest, has fairly broad general powers, performing several non-contentious procedures under the law, the most commonly used of which are the authentication of documents, inheritance procedures, divorce proceedings, providing legal advice on notarial matters, and legalizing documents. Its competence has been constantly updated, in close connection with the evolution of society. Given that humanity is currently undergoing a new revolution, the digital revolution, which will most likely have consequences that far exceed those of the previous great revolution, namely the industrial revolution, notaries must keep pace with technology and use digital tools whose usefulness cannot be disputed, but with great care to preserve the security of the procedures they perform. In our paper, we will take a very brief look at the history of notarial services in Romania, outline the powers of notaries public, highlight some aspects of interest for the main procedures carried out, and express our opinion on the usefulness of digitizing notarial activities.
