Summary/Abstract: The Josephine era was the beginning of a distinct stage in the history of Romanian interfaith relations in the intra- Carpathian area; the provisions of the well-known „edict of religious tolerance”, promulgated on October 29 / November 8, 1781 (with the „rescripts” and „patents of union” that followed), were, however, applied unilaterally. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, the „defections” and „returns” of parish congregations from union with the Church of Rome to Orthodoxy – and vice versa – were a permanent feature; in the county of Hunedoara, part of the Grand Principality of Transylvania, there were numerous translations of this kind.
