Summary/Abstract: Rita Sebestyén reviews Claire Bishop’s 2024 book Disordered Attention, which examines the changed modes of reception of contemporary art and performance, the fragmentation and hybridization of attention. In four essays, the book analyzes the changing conditions of contemporary spectatorship in research-based art, performance exhibitions, interventions, and the political dimensions of architecture in a historical and global context. Bishop argues that the norms of focused attention have broken down and that distraction, hyper attention, and absorption are all valid viewer positions. In addition to contrasting Bishop’s 2024 volume with his 2012 work (Artificial Hells: Participatory Art and the Politics of Spectatorship), the review states that Disordered Attention encourages reflection rather than offering conclusive analyses.
