Summary/Abstract: Archpriest Constantin Gurban was an emblematic figure among the Arad priesthood who campaigned for the defense of the Romanian language, the preservation of schools, and the development of culture, keeping Romanian Orthodoxy intact under the most difficult conditions of the dualist regime. In addition to all this, Archpriest Gurban also engaged in extensive activities at the school level as a school inspector. With this responsibility on his shoulders, he struggled most of the time to open new denominational schools and to develop education to the level where the then schools could serve as models to raise people to a spiritual and cultural level advantageous to the Middle Ages. Despite these times and the policy of denationalization, he continued to visit schools and parishes, where he pointed out the main difficulties encountered in schools. He placed great emphasis on the remuneration of priests and teachers, believing that good pay would facilitate much better the involvement of staff in educating children and people. Priest Constantin Gurban also developed a more pronounced publicist side that deserves to be reviewed and that we will focus on in the present work. He published a series of letters, signed „Epistles of the Old Parish Priest”, addressed to a specific „nephew”, the editor of „Church and School”. In these epistles, he wanted to highlight the importance of the exemplary conduct a young priest, servant of God, must have, to convey the problems society faced, and to provide stories that experience allowed him to tell.
