Summary/Abstract: Coffins made of clay, unfired or fired, were not common in the burial assemblage in the Early Dynastic Period and the Old Kingdom. They appear sporadically, in only a few cases compared to the total number of graves across various cemeteries. Some pottery coffins from these periods have small holes in their bottoms and lower sidewalls. The purpose of the perforations remains unclear. However, another type of puncture typically located in the upper part of the sidewalls, often in the corners, and in the lids seems to have been made for practical reasons.
