Summary/Abstract: A number of grammatical words contribute to the cohesion of the text, especially in their function as carriers of its formal continuity, textual cohesion. These include conjunctions (at the level of sentence and clause syntax), similarly pronoun-type devices (pronouns and pronominal adverbs) with an overlap to higher supra-sentential units, as well as prepositions (as a tool for intrasentential connections), some particles (as indicators of text breaks or, more generally, as means of text structuring). Single-word primary and secondary expressions and multi-component or multi-word expressions functioning as secondary expressions also carry significant pragmatic characteristics, especially stylistic ones. They thus contribute to textual coherence. From a functional point of view, it is useful to identify and label their function as connectors, operators, relators, text orientators, etc. – rather than their traditionally understood belonging to word classes. However, part-of-speech categories are still used for formal classification, and such classification is still binding for the lexicographical processing of connectors in the broad sense. The text draws on experience with the creation of linguistic handbooks of both types (Velká akademická gramatika spisovné češtiny [Great Academic Grammar of Standard Czech], Akademický slovník současné češtiny [Academic Dictionary of Contemporary Czech]). Using specific linguistic examples, it shows how the current classification of parts of speech can be ambiguous, misleading, or limiting. At the same time, the text attempts to offer ways to refine the functional description of language.
