Summary/Abstract: Intergenerational fairness has emerged as a central theme in contemporary European governance, particularly as the European Union (EU) faces unprecedented long-term challenges such as climate change, demographic ageing, fiscal sustainability, and rapid technological transformation. Although EU institutions increasingly reference the rights and interests of future generations, the Union still lacks a coherent legal and institutional framework to systematically integrate long-term responsibility into policymaking. Drawing on recent academic analyses and international developments, evolving EU law, and comparative institutional experiences among Member States, it argues that the Union must move beyond rhetorical commitments and establish binding mechanisms, dedicated institutional structures, and integrated governance frameworks capable of systematically embedding the interests of future generations across all policy fields.
