Summary/Abstract: ,,Holy foolery”, a rare form of asceticism, yet endowed with social and ecclesial features, was born as a reaction to the decay of moral life in society and to the formalism existing in church life. Appearing in Byzantium, this phenomenon manifested itself in a particular way in the 6th - 10th centuries, and later it escalated in Russian spirituality, with its period of broad manifestation in the 16th-18th centuries, but with representatives of this spiritual endeavor up to the contemporary Orthodox world. Church hymnography expresses the holiness of fools for Christ and reveals their providential and ecclesial dimension. The hymnography of the liturgical feasts, which expresses the life of the fools for Christ, highlights the social dimension of their mission and reveals that they began their work in Christian communities only after receiving a divine calling.
