Summary/Abstract: During two missionary expeditions to Pomerania in the years 1124–1128, at the initiative of Bishop Otto of Bamberg, at least fourteen churches were built in twelve towns. Not counting the unknown Kolobrzeg (Kołobrzeg) cathedral from year 1000, these were the first Christian churches in Pomerania. Confronting the bits of information contained in Bishop Otto’s biographies with archaeological discoveries allows us to explain the settlement context in which these churches were erected, as well as their shape, size and construction features. These were small, single-nave churches, the walls of which were built of wood, wattle and clay.
