Historical substance of the statue of Our Lady of Skrzatusz and works related to it as a testimony to its history and cult

Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to the analysis of the historic substance of the figure of Our Lady of Skrzatusz and the artistic works associated with her veneration, presented as both material and spiritual testimony to the development of the cult and the history of the sanctuary. The text discusses and analyzes the dramatic circumstances surrounding the origin of the figure’s cult (the profanation in Mielęcin, 1575); early iconographic depictions of the Skrzatusz Pietà; as well as the results of the 1986 conservation and reconstruction, which confirmed the authenticity of the Gothic substance of the sculpture. Special attention is given to the symbolic elements of the sanctuary: its Baroque architecture and Jesuit origins, the 17th-century silver crowns and royal insignia of the figure, and the unique monstrance in the form of a Pietà. The article concludes with a presentation of the image of the Skrzatusz Pietà in Hämelerwald, documenting the continuity of the cult beyond the borders of Poland.
