Summary/Abstract: Among the prominent Romanian scholars who have focused with particular interest and passion on researching the past of the Romanian province of Banat is the remarkable politician, lawyer, publicist, sociologist, and historian from Banat, Cornel Grofșorean. This was born on 27 October 1881 at Comloşu Mare, Timiş county. His father was a prime county chief, and because of his position, the family moved frequently. That is why his son attended primary school in Debeleanca and Covăciţa (Voivodina), the secondary school in Pancevo, Becicherecul Mare (Zrenianin), Lugoj, Sibiu, and Beiuş. He passed his school-leaving examination in Beiuş in 1900. He graduated from the Law School in Budapest, took his doctor’s degree at the University of Cluj, and passed the exams as a lawyer in Târgu-Mureş. Concomitantly with his juridical studies, he attended the Textiles High School of Kesmeck (Czechoslovakia). In 1913, he settled at Lugoj, where he worked as a lawyer until World War I broke out. He was mobilized and sent to the front. In 1922, he resumed his career and continued to practice law until 1946. For five years (1922-1927), he was an active member of the Averescu Party, but after this brief foray into politics, he went back to his law practice. He held a few important administrative functions (1920-1933): prime county chief at Reşiţa, subprefect of the Caraş county, and mayor of Timişoara twice. In 1932, he founded Institutul Social Banat-Crişana (I.S.C.B.), which he led until the institution was abolished in 1946. From 1933 to 1946, the institute edited 27 issues of its magazine called ‘The Journal of the Banat-Crişana Social Institute‘. He died on 30 January 1949, bitterly disappointed about the abolition of his institute and its magazine owing to the inauspicious times, adverse to culture.
