Summary/Abstract: This paper examines Simović’s plays Hasanaginica, A Miracle in Šargan, The Traveling Theatre Šopalović, and The Battle of Kosovo as canonical works that have shaped both the history of Serbian drama and the broader tradition of Serbian literature. By analyzing the central themes and meanings within each work, as well as their relationship to literary (both oral and written) and cultural traditions, beliefs, and myth, the paper identifies a shared hallmark of Simović’s dramatic writing: a multilayered richness of meaning, poetic suggestiveness, and a complex fusion of tradition and modernity. These qualities align his plays with the modern tragicomedy and the theatre of the absurd. The analysis also focuses on the elements of the fantastic and the marvelous—their narrative shaping, significance, roots in tradition, and Simović’s unique resemanticization of traditional motifs.
