Summary/Abstract: Sofka Nikolić (1906–1982) was a prominent professional folk singer and one of the most media-visible female performers in the interwar period in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The aim of this paper is to provide as precise a reconstruction as possible of her life and professional career. The study is based on a historiographical approach and a critical analysis of archival materials, the press, and other available primary and secondary sources. The analysis shows that her career was concentrated within a relatively short period, characterized by pronounced media visibility, and that mass media played a key role in shaping her public representation and subsequent mythologization. The paper seeks to contribute to a more reliable understanding of the position of professional female popular singers in the interwar Yugoslav musical culture and to point to open questions requiring further comparative research.
