Summary/Abstract: In this article, we present a little-known and, consequently, largely neglected oeuvre of applied music (in theater, film, and radio) by the composer and multimedia artist, Vladan Radovanović (1932–2023). Relying on manuscript scores and other documentation as a supplement to the primary one, we provide a brief overview of this segment of the composer’s legacy, stored at the Institute of Musicology SASA, after which we present the results of the reconstruction, analysis and subsequent interpretation of two of Radovanović’s works: the music for the radio drama Seven: How We Would Read Them Today, and the music for the film The Last Switchman of the Narrow Gauge. The paper also presents the challenges in approaching this material, as well as the ways in which we overcame them. We have, therefore, set two goals within this article: 1) to present the challenges in reconstructing materials related to applied music in theater, radio, and film, with a focus on such challenges in reconstructing the opus of applied music by Vladan Radovanović; 2) to locate the place applied music has within Radovanović’s overall work with emphasis on music for the drama Seven: How We Would Read Them Today (dir. Predrag Bajčetić, 1971) and for the film The Last Switchman of the Narrow Gauge (dir. Vesna Ljubić, 1983), given that these are the works that can be reconstructed to the highest possible degree and thus allow the analytical insight.
