Summary/Abstract: In the Banat region, the church press appeared only in the 19th century, at the same time with the founding of the Bishoprics of Caransebes and Arad, an event that brought to Caransebes, in 1866, a printing house and a printer from the Imperial Court in Vienna. The altar servants were, however, already contributors to religious articles in the economic, political, and cultural newspapers of the time. The first church publications, with the original meaning of the term, are those published by the Bishoprics of Caransebes, namely “The Diocesan Newspaper”, a publication that appeared uninterruptedly between 1886-1947. In 1947, with the founding of the Archdiocese of Timisoara and Caransebes, the “Archdiocesan Newspaper” appeared, as the official organ of the respective archdiocese, but also of the Metropolitan Church of Banat. Then, during the years 1951-1989, as a result of the cessation of the appearance of the “Archdiocesan Newspaper” from Timisoara and of the “Bulletin”, published by the Diocese of Arad, the theological magazine “Metropolitan Church of Banat” was published, followed by a “Church Guide”, in 1980. After 1990, at the initiative of His Eminence Nicolae Corneanu, the metropolitan magazine continued its existence in Timisoara, under the name of “Altar of Banat”, and “Guide” was replaced by a “Calendar of the Archdiocese”, to which was added, from 1990, a paper that became today the diocesan magazine “Resurrection”. From a press statistic, made in 1934, we find that among the country’s newspapers, at that time, no less than 98 were religious. Also, nowadays, in Banat Timisoara, except for diocesan publications, there are a large number of parish and village publications.
