Summary/Abstract: The objective of this study is to assess the attitudes of prospective preschool teachers at J. Selye University toward the language use of preschool children. The theoretical framework outlines the distinctions between prescriptive and descriptive, as well as subtractive and additive linguistic perspectives. It further explores the phenomena of linguistic prejudice, linguistic stigmatization, and linguistic discrimination, alongside the underlying language (typically „correctness”-based) ideologies. The empirical section presents a survey (N=89) that examines—based on three independent variables (1. age, 2. experience, 3. year of study)—whether students tolerate the use of non-standard linguistic elements and forms in children's speech. Contrary to previous similar research, the results show a predominantly positive attitude among respondents. This shift is attributed, among other factors, to a linguistically sensitizing course titled Hungarian Language and Linguistic Norms, established as part of the harmonization processes in recent years.
