Summary/Abstract: This study examines the attitudes of Slovak high school students (N=133) in Southwestern Slovakia toward the Hungarian minority, based on survey data. The analysis covers the perception of the minority's presence, the appraisal of Hungarian language and culture, beliefs regarding Hungarian speakers' proficiency in Slovak, as well as general attitudes and prejudices. While the majority acknowledges linguistic and ethnic diversity, the prestige of the Hungarian language is perceived as low, and acceptance of integration remains divided. The most significant explanatory factor is personal contact: students with Hungarian acquaintances show a more positive linguistic appraisal, are more likely to adopt a „multilingual country” narrative, demonstrate a greater willingness to establish social ties, and possess a more nuanced perception of the minority. A „gap between principle and practice” also emerges: while there is broad conceptual support for mother-tongue education, it does not translate into the acceptance of its practical implications (e.g., the choice of Hungarian schools or the recognition of the Hungarian language's utility).
