Summary/Abstract: The establishment of the Yugoslav National Defence Corps (KNOJ) was one of a series of measures that partisan leadership directed towards the development of reliable intelligence and security apparatus. Following the Soviet models, KNOJ merged the existing units which no longer fought the invaders, but protected the organs of the revolutionary government and the People’s Liberation Army units backgrounds against all types of threats. In Serbia, these units were founded following the pace of liberation. Including battalions and brigades, till the end of the hostilities, three divisions and one brigade of KNOJ operated in Serbia. Although the KNOJ units should have been made of solid, experienced party cadres, in the Serbian units of KNOJ were initially mobilized inexperienced and untrained young men, as well as former members of the collaborationist formations. Their primary task was mopping up the remains of the Chetnik forces. They also secured vital traffic roads, commercial buildings as well as representatives of the new government.
