Summary/Abstract: Serbian school system in the territory of the Habsburg Monarchy was controlled by the Metropolitanate of Karlovci before the reforms of 1774-1777, and after these reforms it came under the supervision of the state. The main idea behind these reforms was secularization, although it was never fully implemented in the ethnically Serbian areas due to the fact that church parishes were the key authorities in the establishment of primary schools. On the other hand, the authority to establish secondary schools remained with the Metropolitan, as it was the case before the reforms. The Metropolitan who played a particularly important role in this respect was Stefan Stratimirović, since two oldest Serbian Gymnasiums were established through his efforts – the Gymnasiums in Karlovci and Novi Sad. Even though it was founded two decades after the one in Karlovci, the Gymnasium in Novi Sad soon acquired the supremacy over the Karlovci Gymnasium, owing to its teachers described in the register of teachers for the year 1830. From this document we learn that they were extremely well-educated, that they all spoke several languages, and that they were very dedicated to their job, which made it possible for their students to gain the necessary knowledge and be very successful in further education. This register is stored in the Archives of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Sremski Karlovci in fund “A” under the number 137.
