Summary/Abstract: The censuses were carried out from various reasons in each country and the Habsburg Monarchy was not an exception. The fi nal result was, however, a facilitated functioning of the state administration. Throughout history, they had not been conducted by the State only, but also by the Church, and the Metropolitanate of Sremski Karlovci followed this trend. One of the censuses was carried out in 1811 at the teritory of the County of Bačka Bishopric and it gave a detailed picture of the Orthodox believers in their four Protopresbyterates (Novi Sad, Žabalj, Sombor and Szeged). The census demonstrated that, considering towns, the largest number of Orthodox people lived in Novi Sad and Sombor, whereas the number of persons per household was signifi cantly smaller in Novi Sad than in Sombor or Subotica. Based on the census, the data of this sort can be produced for all the places in the County of Bačka Bishopric, and which is more, they can be compared to the ensuing censuses thus establishing the movements of the Serbian population at the teritory of this diocese.
