Summary/Abstract: The units of the 42nd Home Guard Division participated in each of the three offences of the Austro-Hungarian army against Serbia in the autumn of 1914. The Division had been formed of the Croatian Home Guard units during the mobilization in July of 1914. Most of the commanding and military staff were the military recruits of Croatian and Serbian nationality. Fighting within the Thirteenth Corps, the Division operated at the front in Western Serbia, mostly at the teritory of Pocerina, Podrinje and Valjevska Podgorina. During the victorial offence of the Serbian army after the triumph at Kolubara, the Division had been entirely decimated and lost its operational ability. After the defeat in Serbia, the units of the Division were retracted to the County of Srem from where, in January of the following year, they were transferred to the Russian front in Galicia. During the fi ghts in Serbia, the units stood out with particular militancy and cruelty towards the civilians. At the time of the fi rst offence in August of 1914, the members of the Division committed mass war crimes in Podrinje and the area around Krupanj.
