Summary/Abstract: This article examines the category of aspect within Gustave Guillaume’s psycho-semantic framework. Based on the concepts of operative time, chronogenesis, and the distinction between implied time and explained time, the study argues that aspect constitutes a fundamental cognitive category that precedes grammatical temporality. The analysis highlights major aspectual oppositions (accomplished / unaccomplished, simple / compound forms) and their role in the mental representation of processes. The paper also situates Guillaume’s theory within post-Guillaumian developments and contemporary approaches, including aspectual compositionality and formal modeling.
