Summary/Abstract: German historian Jörn Rüsen is one of the most prominent contemporary theorists of history. This paper presents the basic principles of his theory of history and its distinctive features – insisting on the scholarly character of history, its rational basis, the narrative essence and its role in the orientation of contemporary life practices. Providing theoretical and methodological foundation to historical social science (Historische Sozialwissenschaft), which appeared along the modernization of the German historiography in the 1970s, Rüsen’s reformed historik, despite its abstract style, represents a kind of “organon of historiographical rationality” and, at the same time, the most complete theory of history in modern historiography.
