Summary/Abstract: During the Revolution of 1848-1849, due to mutual misunderstandings regarding the nation and its liberty, the Serbian-Hungarian War broke out. Inconceivable violence, persecution of the population, and destruction of property, that even the sacral objects were not spared, were part of this war. In these conflicts almost 72% of the City of Novi Sad was destroyed. The remaining population of the city had great difficulties to prepare for the winter and to restore some buildings to be suitable for living. A document from the Manuscript Department of the Matica Srpska (M. 3866) lists the problems that citizens of Novi Sad had in this highly difficult situation. The City of Novi Sad had its own fund for reconstruction of one and a half million forints, which was, at that time, quite a large amount. Using this fund, in only a couple of years, the city was fully reconstructed and became the main political and cultural center of the Serbs in the Monarchy.
