Summary/Abstract: Trieste had a special place in Yugoslav-Italian economic relations between the two World Wars. Due to its geographic position, favourable sea and railroad connections, Trieste was an important mediator in the trade exchange, not only between the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes/Yugoslavia and Italy, but also between the Mediterranean and Central Europe. Tradesmen from Trieste, besides bussinesmen from other regions from both sides of the Adriatic sea, had a common interest and developed mutually useful economic relations, irrespective of official relations between the two countries, which were mainly ungracious. Not only that Trieste played a role of intermediator in Yugoslav-Italian economic relations, but also the market of Trieste was of special significance for the Yugoslav exporters, especially from Slovenian provinces, Dalmatia and Bosnia. Italian government was aware of importance of Trieste and therefore considered a possibility to expand its mediating role to trans-Atlantic countries. In fact, Italy endeavoured to accomplish economic penetration over Yugoslav territory towards other Balkan and the Danube countries. In this respect, the role of Trieste was important.
