Summary/Abstract: The Mountain Wreath by Petar II Petrović Njegoš is as significant for its linguistic Features as it is for its literary-artistic value. As some linguists and literary writers Have pointed out – it is precisely in its language that we find the greatest beauty of this poem. This has in many ways been confirmed in our analyses of certain morphological (grammatical words, use of the infinitive, supine, etc.) and syntactic features (verbal collocations, some other kinds of prepositional-case syntagmas, verbal complementation: the infinitive, da + the present tense, etc.). It has been indicated that two different levels of literary language have been used in Njegoš’s Mountain Wreath – the Montenegrin folk speech, which is very layered, full of stylistic folklore features, with a rich phraseology; and the contemporary literary language with the additions of church-specific language. The poet has used both one and the other when it was more suited to the technique of the verses, their rhythm and harmony. It would be best to word the following conclusion: in the choices that the poet made between the literary and dialectical persona, the poetic moment was the decisive one, and the measure of use of one or the other in the creation of an idiosyncratic and one-of-a-kind poetic expression remains one of the poet’s greatest mysteries.
