Summary/Abstract: The paper investigates the origins and sources as well as the role and function of Slavonic-Serbian linguistic traits in the works of Petar Petrović Njegoš. The analysis focuses on the Slavonic-Serbian lexical hybrids, neological formations and coinages and the competition among Slavonic lexemes. Lexical selection is viewed from within the context of readers’ expectations and believed to be the issue that was directly affected by the relations that existed between central and peripheral tendencies in literature, language and culture. Finally, the paper examines how Njegoš’s expressive language affected other authors of the Dositejan and Slavonic-Serbian period.
