Summary/Abstract: The Serbian savings bank was established as financial co-operative downtown on October 3rd, 1899. This savings bank started to collect its registation fees on October 25th, 1899, and its capital was 100,000 krunas. At the initiative of Vaso Muačević, the savings bank was reorganised into co-partnership in 1907, with the capital 100,000 kruna divided into 1,000 shares. This Serbian savings bank was successfully operating among Serbs in Osijek, providing them needed financial support for investments. During the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Osijek lost its strategic position which resulted in declining of economy and trade, while the savings bank lost its protective role for the local Serbs. Consequently, its work declined and in 1923 Serbian central economic bank plc. from Sarajevo became interested in it, which resulted in its members becoming board members in Serbian savings bank Osijek. As the Serbian named money institution, it was forced during the Independent State of Croatia to stop with its former work and its name was changed to Downtown bank plc. Under the name of Downtown bank it was wholly unknown, without the possibility to expand its work. After the WWII had ended, restored savings bank continued its work аs Serbian savings bank plc, but during changed political circumstances. Closing down this broken money institution was a part of eliminating civic culture in Osijek. According to the decission of Ministry of Finance, the Serbian savings bank was closed on December 7th, 1946.
