Summary/Abstract: The Venetian Board of Trade founded Fondaco dei Turchi in 1621 as lodging for Muslim merchants arriving in Venice for a trade. Although much smaller inn for the same purpose already existed at the end of the XVI century, fondaco was founded for better control of a growing number of Muslim merchants in Venice. In order to achieve that, the Board of Trade established regulations for this fondaco. These rules focused on obligations of a custodian, doorkeepers and tended to regulate Muslim merchants’ life in Venice. However, merchants did not obey every rule. Some of the main violations of rules were: staying out of fondaco during prohibited hours of night, hiding weapons, smuggling tobacco and keeping merchandise out of fondaco. It is also important to notice that certain restrictions which regulated Fondaco dei Turchi were applied on other communities of foreign merchants in Venice.
