Summary/Abstract: After 1868, the Principality of Serbia based its national work in the Ottoman Empire on cultural and educational activities. With the founding of the Bulgarian Exarchate in 1870, Serbian people in the Old Serbia and their education come under the attack of the aggressive Bulgarian politics. In the struggle for the survival of the Serbian nationality, teachers who represented the bastions of the Serbs played an important role. One of those teachers was Života Milovanović. As a Serbian teacher in Kratovo, Milovanović came under the attack of the Exarch’s Metropolitan Hilarion of Kjustendil, who expelled him from Kratovo. In the report he submitted to Serbian authorities, most likely to Deputy Jovan Ristić, Milovanović gave us information about the position of Serbian people and Serbian teachers in the Old Serbia and the hostile environment in which they found themselves in 1872. The mentioned teacher presented a proposal on how to improve the position of Serbian population in the Old Serbia and thus showed that teachers in the Old Serbia were not only the implementers of the policy directed from the Principality of Serbia, but also the creators of that policy. This highlighted the importance of Serbian teachers as national workers abroad.
