Summary/Abstract: When Justin Popović was appointed an assistant professor at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the Belgrade University in 1934, his formal qualifications were called into question. Specifically, his undergraduate diploma was the subject of scrutiny. The controversy was led within the governing bodies of the Faculty and the University but it also soon became public. In the Glas Valjeva49 and Pravda50 newspapers, a debate on these matters between Lazar Trklja and Dimitrije Najdanović took place. Through archival and historical material research, all aspects of this controversy are examined for the first time in this paper. A previously unknown fact that Justin Popović has indeed never finished undergraduate studies in theology is proven beyond a reasonable doubt. On the other hand, it is also shown that he enjoyed all the rights belonging to the doctor of theology and thereby fulfilled the formal qualifications necessary for the university position. This conclusion is supported by the analysis of Greek law no. 2089, and its authentic interpretation. As in the case of many other Serbian students, the law enabled Fr Justin to acquire the PhD degree at the Kapodistrian University of Athens more easily.
