Summary/Abstract: This study examines how valency is realized in participial nominal attribute constructions in Bulgarian, German, and Japanese. While Bulgarian and German use morphologically marked participles, Japanese uses the rentaikei form to modify nouns. The aim is to analyze whether and how subjects, objects, or other dependent arguments are retained or reduced in such constructions. The analysis combines corpus data, constructed minimal pairs, and typological description. Particular attention is paid to the question of whether the Japanese rentaikei is functionally comparable to European participles. The results provide new in- sights into the interface between syntax and morphology and show how valency is gram- matically realized outside finite structures.
