Summary/Abstract: The article examines the concept of catachresis and presents a brief overview of the concept of diminutiveness in the Slavic context. An attempt is made to analyze linguistic units in which the two phenomena intersect. The data covers three groups of catachretic metaphors with the formal structure of diminutives – terminological (with a focus on anatomical ones), folk names (specifically of flowers) and general vocabulary (mainly anthropomorphic). Each of the three groups is examined separately in search of an answer to the main question of whether these are true diminutives and what their specific features are. The main conclusion that must be drawn is that a very small part of the metaphors studied are true diminutives, while in the majority diminutiveness is only formal.
