Summary/Abstract: Naturalism serves as a categorical designation for various cultural philoso-phies advocating humanity’s reconnection with nature in a more immediate way, while nudism represents the practical manifestation of this ideal. Nudism entails the practice of public undressing to full nudity in socially designated spaces. Both naturalism and nudism emerged as products of Western European cultural thought from the mid-18th to the mid-20th century. Nudism may be viewed as objectified naturalism—a bodily practice rooted in cultural ideas of humans as natural beings. Naturalist philosophies brought the human body into contact with elements perceived as life-giving and re-newing forces of nature, such as sunlight and flowing water. The nudity of human body was but one premise for living in harmony with nature. Contemporary nudism likely stands as the last remnant of earlier naturalist thought, though its modern form bears little resemblance to its origins. This paper explores the conceptual and practical links between naturalism and nudism, arguing that the human body serves as their essential common denominator and that both were ideologically and factually oriented toward physical well-being.
