Summary/Abstract: The Ruginoasa locality is located in the Moldavian Plateau, in the northwest of Iași County. The commune covers a total area of 6,101 hectares, of which 655 hectares comprise the population of the four component villages. Approximately 10,000 people live here today. Ruginoasa has been documented since the late 16th century. The villagers who lived here for part of their lives witnessed the history of glory, grandeur, sadness, despair and oblivion of the Ruginoasa estate. The destinies of some of the most illustrious noble families of Moldova - the Sturdza, Roznovanu, Moruzzi and Cuza families - intertwined here, at the Ruginoasa Palace. In 1862, the estate was sold by Alexandru I. Sturdza to Alexandru Ioan Cuza. Maria Moruzzi, stepdaughter of Princess Elena Cuza, loses her legal right to inheritance, and the property is ceded to the "Caritatea" Hospital in Iași. This was the clause stipulated in the will of her ex-husband, Alexandru Al. Cuza, thus respecting the wishes of her father, the prince. During World War I, a hospital operated in the palace (1916-1918). After two decades of neglect, the palace was restored (1969-1979), and three years later, in 1982, the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" Memorial Museum opened its doors. Following a rehabilitation project included in a restoration program funded by the Romanian government, which began in October 2008, the palace underwent a thirty-month consolidation and redevelopment process. This process, which ended in 2013, was based on the historical document, written in French by Princess Elena Cuza in 1863, „Commande de son Altesse, la Princesse Alexandre Couza, Pour etre expedice a sa Residence de Roujinossa pres Tzutzora sur le Pruth, par Galatz”, which I found at the National Archives.
