Summary/Abstract: The year 1821 in the Romanian Principalities was a particularly turbulent one. The Eterist Movement wanted to deal a strong blow to Ottoman interests in the Balkans by establishing an independent Greek state. The presence of the Eterists in the Romanian Principalities greatly complicated the movement launched by Tudor Vladimirescu, who nevertheless managed to give Moldavia and Wallachia the right to have earthly rulers after a long period. The Ottoman Empire was initially surprised by the actions of the Eterist Movement and Tudor Vladimirescu's followers. The two movements were suppressed quite quickly, but they prefaced the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829. At the end of that war, Greece gained its independence and the Danubian principalities became autonomous from the Ottoman Empire.Below is the translation of an article published in 1829 in a prestigious magazine published in Moscow that shows us the action of the Etherist Movement in 1821. The article also refers to the interaction between the Etherists and Tudor Vladimirescu. It is interesting to know how the tsarist authorities viewed the two Romanian countries that were vassals of the Sultan of Constantinople and what they decided to do to remove them from his authority.
