Summary/Abstract: The Jewish population began settling in the Romanian territories primarily during the late medieval period. Information about this stage comes from foreign travelers’ accounts, princely charters, and works by scholars and Russian officials. These sources allow assessment of the Jewish population’s size, economic activity, and daily life in historic Moldavia. Although these accounts often reflect stereotypes and subjective opinions, they provide valuable insight into the social and legal conditions of the Jewish community. The legislation of the time, though not unified, influenced Jewish rights and led to an influx in Bessarabia following its annexation by Russia. Dimitrie Cantemir offers one of the first detailed descriptions of ethnic diversity in Moldavia, highlighting the commercial role of Jews in society.
